Tyler and Samantha got engaged on Christmas Eve and are getting married this July.  They talked to me about taking engagement photos, but there was one little problem: they haven’t seen each other. Tyler has been stationed hundreds of miles from his love. So when he was granted leave for a short weekend that was bustling with activity, we literally had 20 minutes to try to grab some quick engagement pictures. Such is the military life! Pretty family + pretty field…what could be better for fall photos? How about if they have an impeccable sense of style! I love it when Mom has everyone dressed right down to last detail and accessory! Mom is a sweet spirit with an infectious laugh; Dad has a good sense of humor and happens to be a great photographer himself; and little girlie has cute cheeks and blonde hair that beg for a camera to be pointed her way.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing this family of four a couple of different times. A highlight for me when photographing this sweet family is getting to hang out with Sam. Their five-year-old has the vocabulary of an eighteen-year-old and a gregarious personality that I can’t get enough of. You can see from the pictures that he stole the show. And it doesn’t hurt that he has a cutie-pie for a sister and a really great mom and dad!

Spending time with the M family was an absolute delight! It felt like a big play-date that I happened to have a camera to capture. There was the cheery Aubrey with an independent flare and the goofy Maren who was determined to read to everyone and declared everything we did “amazing”. The smiles and love you see in these photos are a genuine capture of how they treated each other.

Get a load of this seriously awesome curly hair that belongs to the little Mr. Gus! Maybe it’s just me, but it’s my favorite thing in each photo. After getting rained out for our original date, I met up with the L Family on a divine late summer evening- simply picture perfect (pun completely intended). This family trekked through all the off-roading hiking I made them do in their best clothes without a single complaint. And, Cathy, I’m sure you’d be tickled to know that when my 10 year old son watched me go through some of these photos, he commented, “That’s the mom! She looks way too young to be the mom!!”

Toney & Carly {love} 19

I was bummed when I woke up on the morning of Toney and Carly’s engagement session. The view out the window greeted me with rain and the weather app on my iPhone announced that more rain was on it’s way. Rescheduling the session was not an option since this couple had driven almost 800 miles for their shoot.

When I went to see them, I was immediately put at ease. Carly, who also happens to be my cousin, was in her usually chipper mood and assured me that the idea of doing a session in the rain didn’t put her off one bit. Toney’s laid back personality was also totally comfortable with a wet photo shoot. And within a short time, I could tell we had something special.

The shoot was such fun. You can tell from Carly’s face how ecstatic she is to be marrying her man, and I loved seeing the thoughtful way that Toney cared and watched out for her.

I love this family. So much. Brian and Bethanie are two of the most friendly, laid-back people you could ever hope to meet. Another thing that characterizes them is their love of nature. Brian is a former tree-climber turned manager of a local regional park. So it was only natural that we do the photos there and include a tree, yes a tree, that is special to him. And my little photographer self was thrilled when we were able to use an old bus as well!
